Bandet forklarer bakteppet for Plastic Beach slik:

In 2006 Gorillaz played their last concerts in support of their Demon Days album at New York’s Harlem Apollo. Then…silence. All members disappeared, each going their own separate ways.

Noodle, had been sensationally shot down from the floating island during the El Mañana video, and presumed dead. Russel went into hiding. 2D, well, who cares what he got up to?

And Murdoc Nicalls…?

We now know this. Murdoc Niccals, bass-player and mastermind of Gorillaz chose to use his time wisely, circumnavigating the globe on a three-year bender. When the money ran out, he turned to selling broken weapons to various underground networks. When that deal too broke down he had to get out of dodge fast. He quickly burnt down the Gorillaz home and former HQ, the legendary Kong Studios, and pocketed the insurance cash.

Using this money he set up his own new headquarters, the now infamous Plastic Beach mansion. Erected on a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean, Plastic Beach was the most desolate location known to man; the furthest point from any landmass on the planet. It was here that Murdoc chose to build his new plastic palace and embarked upon a fresh recording, what would become the third and latest Gorillaz album entitled…Plastic Beach.

But his exodus to the secret hideaway was not to go entirely unnoticed. During his final move his would-be assassins were alerted to his presence as Murdoc boarded the escape boat. With the champagne still fresh and bubbling, the very glass he was holding was shot out of his hand…

Dramatic footage of this narrow escape can be viewed right here.

Og det er altså nettopp på bøljan blå «On Melancholy Hill» utspiller seg.
